Sea Dumped Munitions: Risks & Challenges
lobal Green USA’s Security and Sustainability Program continues discussion on sea-dumped chemical weapons and the larger issue of munitions of all types dumped in the world’s waters. The primary focus of this third roundtable will be an examination of the effect on water security of munitions dumped in oceans, lakes and rivers.
We aim to further the discussions in the earlier roundtables of the legal, public health and possible mitigation issues surrounding munitions dumped not only in the oceans of the world but in lakes and rivers. All stakeholders – US and other government representatives, experts and NGOs – are invited to attend. There will be two presentations with time for questions and discussion.

Paul Walker, Director of Global Green's Security & Sustainability program, is at The Hague this week representing Global Green USA at the 14th annual Conference of the States Parties (CSP) at the OPCW (Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons). He is also chairing Global Green's two-day meeting of an NGO Coalition organized for December 2nd and 3rd. We have over 30 NGOs and 50-60 people participating in this event.

“BOMBS IN OUR BACKYARD” at DC Environmental Film Festival
Join Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Ginny Durrin and a panel of experts for a work-in-progress screening of “Bombs in Our Backyard.” This feature-length documentary film chronicles the sixteen years of uncertainty following the discovery of a forgotten World War I-era Manhattan Project in Spring Valley, a neighborhood in Washington, DC. No one goes scot-free in this tale of see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.
Joining Durrin on the panel will be Dr. Paul F. Walker, director of the Security & Sustainability program at Global Green USA; Mark Baker, US Army Corps of Engineers Spring Valley historian; investigative reporter Charlie Bermpohl; and Thomas M. Smith, ANC Commissioner 3D02 for Spring Valley, American University and Westover Place.

Screenings will take place at the DC Environmental Film Festival on Thursday, March 19 at 7 and 8 p.m. in the Wechsler Theatre, on the third floor of the Mary Graydon Center on the American University campus. Panel discussions will follow the screenings. The event is free and open to the public. There will be a reception in between the screenings.
Tenth Annual Russian National Chemical Dialogue
Green Cross Russia, Green Cross Switzerland, and Global Green USA, all national affiliates of Green Cross International founded by Mikhail Gorbachev in 1993, are pleased to announce the forthcoming Tenth Anniversary Russian National Dialogue on the Chemical Weapons Convention and chemical weapons destruction in Moscow in October 2008.
The annual Green Cross/Global Green National Dialogue has been and continues to be a unique meeting place for all stakeholders in the ongoing chemical weapons destruction process. The two-day conference brings together representatives from Russian chemical weapons stockpile regions; federal ministries and agencies responsible for the implementation of the Russian chemical weapons destruction programme; countries providing assistance to the Russian Chemical Weapons Destruction Program; the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW); and Russian and foreign non-governmental organizations, academia, and the mass media.

A Documentary Film produced and directed by Alice & Lincoln Day
Come join Friends of the Earth and Global Green USA for a free showing of the very successful 60-minute documentary film, “Scarred Lands & Wounded Lives: The Environmental Footprint of War,” recently premiered at the DC Environmental Film Festival. The film is an investigation into the devastating environmental impacts of war. The producers will also be present for a short panel discussion after the movie.
